Need to escape the Sacramento summer heat? Four hours and 220 miles will get you to the coastal town of Mendocino. This Victorian village is perched atop the bluffs of the Mendocino Headlands, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. My husband and I spent four days and three nights here over the Fourth of July holiday. With over 24 nearby state and national parks and several surrounding towns, our itinerary was just a start.
Day 1: We headed out around 10 AM to avoid the Sacramento traffic, stopping for lunch in Santa Rosa at the popular Russian River Brewing Company. We arrived in Mendocino around 4:30 and checked into our room. After a walk at the headlands, we dined at our favorite restaurant, Luna Trattoria (reservations recommended—they're always booked). We ended the day with drinks and live music at Patterson’s Pub.
Day 2: On the Fourth of July, we discovered that Mendocino holds an annual Fourth of July parade, turning the streets into a lively local street party for several hours. One of the open bars was Dick’s Place, a local favorite. We had several dining recommendations, including Café Beaujolais and Frankies Pizza, but chose to dine at Luna's again.
Day 3: This was a jam-packed day! We started with a hike at Jug Handle Preserve, a lesser-known area with a 5.2-mile loop featuring bluffs, beach, and a pygmy forest. We opted for a shorter hike on the bluffs and beach. Next, we headed to Fort Bragg, stopping at Glass Beach with its walking and biking trails. After exploring the town and its shops, we had dinner at North Coast Brewery. Our last stop was a trip on the Skunk Train to the Glen Blair Bar, which is open on select Friday and Saturday nights.
Day 4: We had breakfast and then drove home.
